Dr. Susan Briner
Dr. Briner has been a pediatrician for more than 25 years. She trained at UTMB in Galveston, then moved to Coronado, California, where she had a small private practice for 12 years. Before becoming Medical Director of LBUCC in August, 2009, Dr. Briner also worked for Parkland Health & Hospital System at the DeHaro-Saldivar Health Center and for The Joint Commission as an ambulatory care surveyor.
She enjoys helping mothers successfully breastfeed their babies and is especially pleased when families ask her advice on how to raise happy, confident children. She’s the mother of two grown children and hopes to become a grandmother some day.
Dr. Elizabeth Keyes
Dr. Keyes graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Baylor University and studied medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. She completed her residency at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas, where she also served as chief resident.
Dr. Keyes is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and holds certifications in pediatric advanced life support, basic life support, and neonatal resuscitation. She belongs to the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr. Ruiz-Velasco Rizo
Dr. Jesus Ruiz-Velasco Rizo was born in Aguascalientes, Mexico where he received his undergraduate degree from the Instituto Autónomo de Ciencias y Tecnologías, as well as his medical degree from the Universidad Autónomo de Zacatecasin 1975. He completed his residency in Pediatrics at Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Dr. Ruiz-Velasco Rizo is licensed by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and is a member of The American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, Texas Pediatric Society, and the Dallas County Medical Society.
Dr. Felix Erfe
Dr. Felix Erfe completed his undergraduate degree at the University of the East with a Bachelor of Science in Pre-Med. He received his medical degree at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila in 1972. After completing a rotating internship at Ospital NG Maynila Medical Center in Manila, he finished his residency in General Pediatrics at the Jersey City Medical Center in Jersey City, New Jersey and Overlook Hospital in Summit, New Jersey.
Dr. Erfe has been practicing medicine for over 27 years, 17 of which have been at Los Barrios Unidos Community Clinic.
Dr. Ruby Bolden
Dr. Ruby Bolden graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and a minor in Chemistry from Dillard University in New Orleans in 1970. She received her medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC and completed her residency at DC General Hospital in Washington, DC.
Dr. Bolden is a board elligible pediatrician by the American Board of Pediatrics as well as a published physician. She has practiced medicine for over 28 years and has been a valuable member of Los Barrios Unidos Community Clinic since 2002.
Dr. Emily Sloan
Dr. Emily Sloan received a Bachelors of Science degree in Biochemistry and Genetics from Texas A&M University. She received her medical degree from the University of Texas-Houston and completed an internship and residency at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas. Dr. Sloan is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. She is fluent in Spanish and has practiced medicine for 7 years.
Dr. Margarita Fallena
Dr. Margarita Fallena received her medical degree, with honors, from the Universidad Anáhuac México. She completed her internship at St. Paul University Hospital in Dallas, her residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Rheumatology at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas.
Dr. Fallena is a published physician, fluent in Spanish and English, and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology.
Dr. Gerhard Gruschkus
Dr. Gerhard Gruschkus completed his undergraduate in chemistry with honors from the University of Texas in Austin and received his Medical Doctorate from the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Gruschkus retired from the army in 1987 with the rank of colonel.
He is licensed with the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and Diplomat certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Gruschkus speaks German and has been practicing medicine for over 30 years.
Dr. Megan Shaw
Dr. Megan Shaw received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology as well as Psychiatry from the University of Virginia and her Medical Doctorate from Virginia Commonwealth University-Medical College of Virginia. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida.
Dr. Shaw is certified in advanced cardiac life support, pediatric advanced life support, and neonatal advanced life support. She is a member of the American College of Physicians, Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Medical Society, American Association of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, and Physicians for Human Rights. Dr. Shaw is fluent in Spanish and has volunteered extensively around the world, from Peru to Ghana, helping those in need.
Dr. Jacob Pena
Dr. Jacob Pena received a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Texas at El Paso and his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Texas-Houston Medical School. Dr. Pena completed his residency at Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program in Sugarland, Texas.
He was a National Health Corps Scholar and is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. Dr. Pena is fluent in both English and Spanish.
Sara J. Phillips, FNP
Sara J. Phillips is a Family Nurse Practitioner certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She received her Bachelor in Nursing from the University of Mississippi Medical Center and her Master in Nursing from the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing. Sara holds certifications in basic life support for healthcare providers, disaster response training, and crises prevention intervention. She is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Texas Nurse Practitioners, and North Texas Nurse Practitioners.
Her passions are serving the underserved and global public health. She has volunteered in several developing countries around the world providing care and support to those in need.
Jhudy Mohan, RN, MSN, CCRN, FNP-C
Jhudy Mohan, RN, MSN, CCRN, FNP-C received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the College of Nursing in Indore, M.P. India. She completed the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at the Texas Tech University Health Science Center with a Masters of Science in Nursing. She is a licensed family nurse practitioner as well as registered nurse in the state of Texas and holds certifications in basic life support, advanced care life support, and is certified as a critical care nurse.
She is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Texas Nurse Practitioners, North Texas Nurse Practitioners, and the American Association of Critical Care Nursing.
Dr. Zareen Tasneem
Dr. Zareen Tasneem was born in Pakistan where she received her degree in Medicine and Surgery from Karachi Medical and Dental College-University of Karachi, Pakistan. She completed an internship and residency in internal medicine and surgery at Aga Khan University and Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan, and a residency in family medicine at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, where she was selected as Star Employee of the Year and Chief Resident. Dr. Tasneem holds certifications in pediatric advanced life support, basic life support, advanced cardiovascular life support, and is certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates and the American Board of Family Medicine.
Dr. Tasneem is a published physician, fluent in English, Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, and has a working fluency in Spanish. She is also a member of The American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Medical Association.
Dr. Roberto Rodriguez
Dr. Roberto Rodriguez is the primary physician at LBUCC’s satellite clinic, the Grand Prairie Community Health Center. Dr. Rodriguez received his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas in Austin and his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in East Lansing, Michigan. Dr. Rodriguez completed his residency in family practice at Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, Texas.
Pat Harris, DDS
Dr. Pat Harris has been providing dental services at Los Barrios for over 20 years and has been the Dental Director at LBUCC since 1992. Dr. Harris earned his DDS from the University of Texas Dental Branch at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Texas. He is a member of the National Network for Oral Health Access, the National Association of Community Health Centers, and a National Health Service Corps Alumnus.
Shirley Vinson, RDH
Shirley Vinson, RDH, received a degree in Dental Hygiene from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta Georgia. She has worked at Los Barrios Unidos Community Clinic for over 20 years and speaks some Spanish.
Silvia Urueta, WHNP
Silvia Urueta is a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and has been providing prenatal care at Los Barrios Unidos for over 16 years. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Texas at El Paso and her Master of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Texas in Arlington.
She is a member of the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health, is certified by the National Certification Corporation, and is licensed by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.
